This is the true definition of a gritty / bad ass ball player. No trash talking, no dancing or any false humlity.
A Chuck Bednarik or Les Ritcher type. He would just level the hell out of you.
@samarroon That was such a bad Super Bowl. All the turnovers and bad calls by the refs. If Dallas coach Tom Landry had played Roger Staubach instead of Craig Morton, Baltimore would have lost. But credit the Colts, they won thanks to Jim “Lassie” O’Brien.
@MIKEAVO, I do agree he should be in the HOF. No question. I didn’t like him and I’ve seen the game plenty of times (I’ve got the game on DVD–SBIII) and he played well, as did Tom Matte, but as a MLB, he probably should have been in it more. Maybe I’m being hard on him, but there’s no question from me he was great. Greater than cheapshot artist Lambert.
I didn’t like the man at all, but he does deserve to be in the Hall of Fame as does guys like Johnny Robinson, Mike Stratton, Paul Lowe, Bob Talamini, Winston Hill, Jerry Kramer and Gino Cappeletti.
Bill Curry has said that none of the former Colt players have ever been invited to Indy. It’s a disgrace to forget these men who made the Colts a house hold name.
Not only has Mike Curtis been ignored, but Chris Hanburger of the Redskins has been ignored by the NFL Hall of Fame. He was well known for blitzing.
Bubba Smith accused his teammates of throwing Super Bowl III. For Earl Morrall not to see Jimmy Ore by himself with his arm up waving with no one around him, something was very wrong.
@Dietpepsivanilla if you watch the tape of SB 3, he made about 10 tackles…the Jets admitted the gamme plan was to stay away from Curtis, who they considered great, and run to the opposite sdie, which they did 90% of the game….He is a true HOFamer, and played the game by the rules of the day…
He should be in the HoF, but he was owned in Super Bowl III and he’d be tossed out of plenty of games today because of his clothesline tackles. But he wasn’t a cheapshot artist like Jack Lambert, who was a dirty player.
i had a feeling they were going to show Curtis knocking the drunk fan on his behind. Served the guy right, if you are gonna go on the field, be prepared to get tackled! The clip of Curtis sacking Roman Gabriel is also one that commonly gets shown as an example of good old fashioned smashmouth football.
1.Curtis definitely should be in the HOF! Bart Starr played against them all, and saw Butkus twice a year. The only player he said he was ever truly afraid of was Mike Curtis.
I read that Bobby Boyd yelled at Morral during half time. I have to agree here. How Curtis did’nt beat up Morral is beyond me. He took the loss personally and was infuriated at losing to the AFL. The 68′ Colts allowed 143 points on def. The 69′ Vikings 133. Although both lost at the end. They were two of the most destructive teams to ever come out of the NFL. The phrase ” smashmouth football’ is often overused today.
In the case of these two, it may have been underused.!
Never knew of that Lomabardi explanation. Loved to have seen it.
Morral played horrendus ( the flea flicker play…OH MAN !! ) We’ll never know, but if ever a case for throwing a game could be made , it ’s here. The Colt offense moved the ball all over the field. Shula and Morral did end up in Miami, but so did receiver Willie Richardson for 1970.Then in 71′ he was back with the Colts. Just long eneugh to miss out on the Colts SB V win.
Never new of that replay of Lombardi explaining the game. Loved to have seen it.
As far as the game being thrown, we the fans will never know. But if ever you can make a case. This is it.The Colt offense moved the ball up and down the field. Another twist is that not only Morral and Shula ended in Miami, but also receiver Willie Richardson. He played with Miami in 70′ then returned to Baltimore in 71. Just long eneugh to miss out on the Colts SB V win.
